Types Of Asbestos
Asbestos is a term encompassing multiple types of minerals which belong to the serpentine and amphibole families.
According to the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) there are various types of asbestos. The AHERA classifies the asbestiform varieties of the following minerals as asbestos:
Bonded asbestos
We use the term “bonded asbestos” to refer to asbestos that’s been integrated into other materials. Asbestos is commonly found in various types of cement sheeting, tiles and pipes and these are the first places we check for when you use our asbestos removal services.
It’s generally the safer form, though if the material it is part of becomes damaged or decays, asbestos fibres can be released and therefore become dangerous – this is when we’d refer to it as “friable” asbestos (asbestos fibres that can be inhaled).
Bonded asbestos is mainly found at residential properties.
Friable asbestos
Mainly found on commercial and industrial sites, friable asbestos is the truly nasty stuff. If ACMs can be pulverised or disturbed, they easily break up and release fibres into the air. Examples of friable asbestos include old ropes and fire blankets. But it’s important to remember that bonded asbestos can become friable and therefore dangerous.
